During the International Day of Service, Shannon O'Kane '99 worked with a school in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Through her work with The PEPY Ride*, she and others helped provide bikes to incoming 7th grade students as an incentive for higher attendance, and to facilitate their access to education. The average student drops out of school by 3rd grade, and less than 30% go on to secondary (middle) school. By providing incentives and offering bikes to children with high attendance, The Bike to School initiative is an effort to increase daily attendance in school, decrease the drop out rate, and increase enrollment in high school. We believe that education is the key to change, and any improvement are able make is going to come through increased quality and access to education.
* The PEPY Ride (www.pepyride.org) is an environmentally conscious NGO that works to improve educational opportunities in rural Cambodia.
